TelevisionCafe was created for people who want to choose a better TV without getting buried in specifications, marketing claims and endless model numbers.
Behind the site is Michael Sonnen, a longtime enthusiast of televisions, projectors and other audio-visual equipment. What started as a personal interest in using, testing, adjusting and calibrating displays gradually became the foundation for TelevisionCafe.
Over the years, Michael has spent countless hours comparing TVs and projectors, experimenting with picture settings, learning how different display technologies behave in real rooms and helping friends decide which devices actually make sense for their needs and budgets.
TelevisionCafe takes that same practical approach and makes it available to a wider audience.
Why TelevisionCafe Exists
Buying a television has become surprisingly complicated.
OLED, QD-OLED, Mini LED, RGB Mini LED, HDR10, Dolby Vision, VRR, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, 144Hz and dozens of other specifications can make two TVs that look almost identical on paper feel completely different in everyday use.
Our goal is to cut through that complexity and focus on the questions people actually ask before spending their money.
Is the more expensive model really better? Is OLED the right choice for a bright living room? Does a gamer need 144Hz? Is the flagship worth paying hundreds or even thousands more for? Will the TV still look good during the day? And which features will you actually notice after the excitement of buying a new TV wears off?
Those are the kinds of questions TelevisionCafe is built to answer.
Meet Michael
Michael Sonnen is the creator and primary contributor behind TelevisionCafe.
His interest in home entertainment goes beyond simply watching television. For years, he has enjoyed using, comparing, testing and calibrating TVs, projectors and related audio-visual equipment, paying particular attention to how changes in picture settings, room conditions and display technology affect the actual viewing experience.
He has also regularly found himself in the familiar role of being the person friends ask before buying a new TV, projector or other home entertainment device.
That experience helped shape the philosophy behind TelevisionCafe: explain the technology, compare the options and help people choose equipment that fits how they actually watch.

How We Review TVs
A useful TV review should do more than rewrite a manufacturer's specification sheet.
When we have hands-on access to a television, we pay attention to the aspects of the experience that specifications alone cannot fully describe. That can include picture quality in different lighting conditions, black levels, HDR impact, reflections, motion, gaming performance, smart TV usability, sound, design and the practical experience of living with the television.
Calibration and picture settings are also important. A TV can look very different depending on the picture mode, room lighting and settings being used, so we consider how a display performs beyond the bright and heavily processed modes commonly seen in stores.
Not every television covered by TelevisionCafe is personally available for hands-on testing. When that is the case, we do not pretend otherwise. Research-based analysis uses manufacturer specifications, documentation and reliable independent information to evaluate the model and place it in context with competing TVs.
We believe readers should be able to understand the difference between first-hand experience and research-based analysis.
What We Look At
Depending on the television and the type of review, we may evaluate picture quality, black levels, HDR performance, brightness, reflections, motion handling, upscaling, gaming features, smart TV performance, sound, design, connectivity and overall value.
For hands-on reviews, room conditions and picture settings also matter. A television can behave very differently in a dark room, a bright living room or when switching between movies, sports and gaming.
Our Editorial Approach
Our goal is not to make every new flagship TV sound revolutionary.
A more expensive television is not automatically the better purchase, and the TV with the highest specification numbers is not necessarily the right choice for every viewer.
We try to explain both strengths and weaknesses, identify meaningful differences between competing models and consider value alongside absolute performance.
Recommendations are based on what makes sense for different types of viewers, rooms and budgets rather than simply choosing the most expensive model available.
