Samsung S90H Picture Settings: Start Here

A new OLED should make movie night feel like an upgrade. If your Samsung S90H looks too blue, too smooth or strangely dim, start with the picture mode before you start chasing sliders.

Quick answer: Start with Filmmaker Mode for movies and regular TV, then adjust SDR brightness for your room. Use the HDR profile below while genuine HDR content is playing. For a console or PC, switch to Game Mode and finish the source's HDR setup before judging the picture.

Samsung S90H Picture Settings Guide

The goal is believable skin tones, visible shadow detail and bright highlights that still contain texture. A face should look like a face, and a white jersey should show folds instead of becoming a glowing patch.

This guide focuses on the 2026 U.S. Samsung S90H. Recommendations combine published model-specific measurements, Samsung's explanations of picture controls and practical viewing advice. TelevisionCafe has not performed an in-house calibration of this television. Values are starting points, not individual panel calibration.

For the hardware, strengths and size differences, see our Samsung S90H review.

Before You Change the Settings

Open Settings > All Settings > Picture. Select your picture mode, then open Expert Settings for the individual controls. Menu wording and available options can vary with firmware, input and signal format.

  1. Play the content you want to configure. Start an SDR show for SDR adjustments, or an actual HDR movie for HDR adjustments. The home screen is a poor place to judge either.
  2. Pause automatic picture adjustments. If AI or adaptive picture processing is active, disable it while establishing a consistent baseline.
  3. Check energy-saving controls. Look for brightness-related options under Power and Energy Saving. Disable automatic brightness reduction while making comparisons.
  4. Photograph the original settings. It gives you a quick way back if you prefer the previous picture.
  5. Use a familiar scene. Pick something with faces, dark clothing and bright objects. Change one setting, replay the scene, then decide.

You can restore automatic adjustments afterward if their convenience matters more to you than keeping the picture consistent. Just remember that an adaptive setting can change the image as your room lighting changes.

Best Samsung S90H Settings for SDR

SDR covers plenty of everyday viewing: cable channels, older movies and streams that are not labeled HDR. Here is a measured baseline for the main picture controls, followed by our processing recommendations.

ControlStarting point
Picture ModeFilmmaker Mode
Contrast45
Color25
Color ToneWarm2
Color Space SettingsAuto
Gamma2.2
BrightnessAdjust for room lighting
Peak BrightnessOff for a subdued nighttime picture; High when more light is needed

For a clean 4K source, our recommended starting point is Sharpness 0, with extra contrast enhancement and noise reduction disabled where available. These are conservative processing choices, not measured calibration values.

Warm2 can look unusual after a cool showroom preset. Give it a few minutes with a familiar face before deciding. If you still prefer Warm1, use it; comfort matters, but that preference should not be presented as a more accurate calibration.

Samsung S90H SDR Picture Settings

Daytime and Nighttime Viewing Need Different Brightness

Set SDR brightness from your usual seat, with the room lit the way you actually watch. An afternoon football game and a late-night drama do not need to have the same intensity.

At night, lower Brightness until white subtitles feel comfortable while faces remain easy to see. In daylight, raise it gradually. If that is still insufficient, try the brighter Peak Brightness option from the SDR table before switching to a heavily processed preset.

Watch the scale: Published S90H settings use a Brightness scale up to 100. A number copied from an older Samsung guide with a different scale is not an equivalent setting. This also does not mean Contrast should be pushed to 100.

Do not turn Color up simply because daylight makes the picture feel less punchy. Check brightness and the position of lamps first. Otherwise, the same profile may produce orange faces and fluorescent grass once evening arrives.

For room layout and reflections, our bright-room TV guide explains what to consider beyond a brightness slider.

Best Samsung S90H Settings for HDR Movies

Start a title that is actually playing in HDR, then open the picture controls. An HDR badge on a movie's information page does not guarantee your current subscription, device and playback settings are delivering it.

ControlHDR starting point
Picture ModeFilmmaker Mode
Brightness100
Contrast50
Color25
Color ToneWarm2
Color Space SettingsAuto
Peak BrightnessHigh
HDR Tone MappingStatic for accuracy; try Active for a brighter presentation

Leave the HDR gamma and shadow controls at their mode defaults initially. Do not copy the SDR Gamma 2.2 selection into an HDR profile.

Our advice is to judge HDR using both a bright scene and a dark one. Look for texture in clouds and lamps, then check whether a dimly lit face is readable without the background turning gray.

The S90H supports HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, but not Dolby Vision. There is no Dolby Vision Cinema mode to enable. A streaming service's Dolby Vision label does not add that capability to the television.

Samsung S90H HDR Picture Settings

HDR Too Dark? Change the Right Setting

If an entire HDR movie looks uncomfortably dim, check the HDR table and automatic brightness controls first. If only one nighttime scene is dark, compare another title before changing the whole profile.

Static tone mapping is the accuracy-oriented baseline. Active offers a brighter interpretation of HDR, with a trade-off in fidelity. Compare them using the same scene rather than treating the brighter option as automatically better.

Our recommendation: try room lighting before stacking picture enhancements. A lamp shining toward the screen can make subtle shadows difficult to see. Moving it behind or beside the seating area may help more than repeatedly lifting dark tones.

A useful check: Brighten the image enough to read a dark jacket, then look at the surrounding black areas. If everything has become gray, back off. You want to reveal detail without washing out the scene.

For a broader checklist covering sources, streaming and room conditions, read why HDR looks so dark on your TV.

Motion Settings for Movies and Sports

For movies, our preferred starting point is Picture Clarity Settings Off, where available. If you enjoy the familiar film look, leave it there. If camera pans bother you, try Custom and introduce a small amount of Judder Reduction.

Watch the outline of a person walking across a detailed background. If you see rippling edges or the scene starts resembling a daytime soap, reduce the smoothing. A small adjustment is easier to live with than maximum interpolation.

Sports are a separate judgment call. Compare Off with a mild Custom setting during an actual game. Watch the ball, player outlines and the scoreboard during pans. Keep whichever produces the cleaner result for your feed.

Use caution with Clear Motion options, if present: they can make the image darker. Avoid compensating for that by changing several unrelated controls at once.

A practical approach is to choose one movie scene and one sports clip as your references. Changing motion settings between random YouTube videos makes it hard to tell whether the setting or the source improved.

Samsung S90H Gaming Picture Settings

Samsung S90H Gaming Settings: Get the Basics Right

Use Game Mode for interactive play. On Samsung's current menu layout, look under All Settings > Connection > Game Mode Settings; menu placement can change with software. Auto is convenient when the source correctly triggers automatic low-latency switching.

CheckRecommended approach
Game ModeAuto; use On if automatic switching fails
Input Signal PlusEnable for the connected HDMI port
VRREnable on the compatible console or PC; verify the active status
Game Motion PlusOff for the lowest-latency starting point, where available
HDR calibrationRun on the source after choosing the TV's final HDR behavior
Extra game picture enhancementsLeave off initially; add only when you prefer the result

Enable Input Signal Plus under Connection > External Device Manager for the port you are using. If the console reports missing HDR support, check this before changing color or brightness.

Samsung's Game Bar can show HDR and VRR status. On supported remotes, press and hold Play/Pause while gaming to open it. Use that information to confirm what is actually running.

The movie table is not a claim of a separately measured Game Mode calibration. Start with the game profile's defaults and configure SDR and HDR while each type of game is running.

PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Setup

PlayStation 5

Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Set HDR to On When Supported so SDR games remain SDR. Then select Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen instructions.

Our recommendation is to settle on the TV's HDR game settings before running those screens. If you later make a significant change to HDR processing, repeat the adjustment. A universal number of button presses cannot account for every panel and configuration.

Xbox Series X|S

Open Settings > General > TV & display options. Check the detected display capabilities and the relevant video modes, including Allow 4K and HDR10. Set the resolution and refresh rate your setup supports, then run the console's Calibrate HDR for games tool.

Leave Dolby Vision out of your S90H setup: the TV does not support it. Check each game's own HDR controls as well, because a console-level adjustment does not replace every game's setup.

Gaming PC

Select the desired resolution and refresh rate in the PC's display settings, then verify the signal on the TV. The S90H supports up to 4K at 165Hz with compatible hardware; PS5 and Xbox output top out at 120Hz.

Our troubleshooting order is simple: verify the GPU output and cable, then the TV's input settings, then the game's display mode. A 165Hz television cannot make a game render 165 frames per second.

Sharpness, Color and Shadow Detail: Keep a Light Touch

Use the processing recommendations in the SDR section as a clean baseline. If an older channel looks soft, try a small Sharpness increase and inspect fine lettering. Stop when outlines start developing bright borders.

Noise reduction is worth testing on a visibly messy feed. Our advice is to compare a moving face before and after enabling it: if skin texture disappears along with the noise, the processing is too strong for that source.

Leave Tint and White Balance alone unless you have a specific reason to adjust them. Copying another owner's multipoint calibration can make your own panel less accurate. A meter-based calibration corrects an individual screen; a settings guide helps you choose sensible modes and controls.

For dark scenes, avoid treating Shadow Detail as an everyday brightness slider. If black areas look wrong only on an HDMI device, check the source's output range and the TV's HDMI Black Level options first. Use compatible automatic settings where available.

Try changes on more than one program. A teal-and-orange movie grade is not proof that your television's color settings are wrong.

Do These Settings Work on Every S90H Size?

The basic mode choices are useful across the family, but U.S. S90H sizes do not all use identical panels. Published North American testing identifies standard WOLED in the 42-, 55-, 65- and 83-inch versions, and RGB Tandem OLED in the 48- and 77-inch versions.

Separate 65- and 77-inch measurements support the same main SDR and HDR selections used here. That agreement does not mean the same Brightness slider position delivers identical light output on both screens.

Match the model and market: Use your exact screen size, regional model and firmware when comparing settings. This guide is for the U.S. S90H; overseas panel variants may need different advice.

If you are comparing rather than setting up a purchase, our LG C6 vs. Samsung S90H comparison covers why size matters to that decision.

Save Your Settings and Check the Result

After adjusting a streaming app, check your HDMI sources too. Samsung offers an Apply Picture Settings option on supported configurations, allowing settings to be applied to the current source or all sources. Use the current source when different devices need different treatment.

Then play an SDR show, an HDR movie and a game. Reopen the controls during each to confirm the intended mode and settings are active. Do not assume one successful adjustment covers every format and input.

  • Faces: Do skin tones look believable?
  • Bright areas: Can you still see texture in a white shirt or sunlit cloud?
  • Shadows: Is dark clothing readable without making the entire scene gray?
  • Motion: Are pans comfortable without distracting smoothing artifacts?
  • Games: Is the expected HDR, refresh-rate and VRR signal active?

If several changes have made the image worse, use Picture > Expert Settings > Reset Picture for a fresh baseline instead of continuing to adjust around the problem.

Once familiar content looks good in your normal lighting, stop adjusting and watch something. A comfortable, consistent picture beats spending every movie searching for a slightly better slider position.

Samsung S90H Picture Settings FAQ

What is the best Samsung S90H picture mode?

Filmmaker Mode is the recommended starting point for SDR and HDR movies. Use Game Mode for interactive gaming, then adjust the profile for your room and source.

Why does Filmmaker Mode look darker?

It can look less intense than brighter, heavily processed presets. For SDR, adjust brightness for the room. For HDR, check the HDR profile and automatic brightness controls before changing shadow settings.

Should HDR Tone Mapping be Static or Active?

Choose Static as the accuracy-oriented starting point. Try Active when a brighter presentation is more comfortable, and compare both using the same scene.

Does the Samsung S90H have Dolby Vision settings?

No. The S90H supports HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, but it does not support Dolby Vision for movies or games.

Can I copy settings from the Samsung S90F?

Do not treat them as an S90H calibration. Confirm the exact model, region, control scale and panel before transferring advice from another television.

Should I copy another owner's white balance values?

No. Individual panels vary. Leave white balance at its defaults unless you are calibrating your own screen or correcting a specific issue with suitable measurement tools.
